      A painter leaves their soul on the canvas; a distiller distils theirs into the spirit.

      In the uppermost reaches of Speyside, mist lingers over the valley all year round. A single pair of stills runs quietly, and a long 120-hour fermentation serves one purpose: the purity of the very beginning. Devotion is given to the craft and passion is entrusted to time — here, distilling is an art.

      A devotion to the purity of the very beginning, to the smallest of differences, and to the kind of beauty that only time can reach. Twelve years is that devotion in its fullest form.

      And the deepest devotion always gives rise to bolder ideas. From the same devotion, SPEY 12 Year Old sets out towards two new limited editions: one chose defiance, the other chose to burn.

      As a painter studies the character of a pigment, the distiller follows the grain of the oak, in search of an expression that flavour has yet to reveal. For centuries, oak casks have been shaped by fire alone. In pursuit of a purer oak sweetness, made-to-order new casks from Tonnellerie Quintessence in Bordeaux overturn that tradition with mist-toasting: a fine mist tames the flame, letting the heat pass slowly and evenly into the oak.

      Now this unprecedented experiment in art returns for its second act. At 56.1% cask strength, it holds the freshness of white peach and fresh grape, with a finish that settles into a wisp of jasmine tea. When the mist clears, a familiar twelve years takes on a shape that asks to be looked at again.

      Devotion worth one act of defiance. Through defiance, art is made.

      Fire | SPEY 15 Year Old Cigar Malt
       
      “Art is the elimination of the unnecessary.” Creation always carries destruction within it — and a cigar is the only handcrafted work of art that must be burned to be experienced. SPEY 15 Year Old Cigar Malt was born for this kinship. It rests first in American bourbon casks, then moves into a Port STR cask reborn through three trials by fire (shaved, toasted and re-charred), where it matures quietly for more than a decade.

      Fire sculpted its body; time filled its soul.
